On 1 October 2022, Arema played a home game against their rivals Persebaya in front of tens of thousands of spectators. The visitors won the league fixture. After the match ended, a riot occured. Unhappy Arema fans broke into the football pitch. The police tried to end the pitch invasion with tear gas. This led to panic, which resulted in chaos. Many people were trampled and suffocated. Dozens of fans died because of the stadium disaster in Malang, which became one of the most lethal stadium disasters.
