The Estadio Nemesio Camacho El Campín, which became one of the major Colombian sports venues, opened with a match between the national football teams of Colombia and Ecuador. The visitors won the game. The stadium hosted the 2001 Copa América final, which was won by the national football team of Colombia after defeating the United Mexican States 1-0. Iván Ramiro Córdoba Sepúlveda scored the only goal of the match. The Colombian defender played hundreds of matches for Football Club Internazionale Milano. The world famous Italian football club Internazionale won several world championship titles. They won their first-ever world championship title in 1964 after defeating the Argentine club Independiente.

Tenants

Independiente Santa Fe and Millonarios Fútbol Club use the Estadio Nemesio Camacho El Campín for home games. The Millonarios became one of the first Colombian sports clubs with 1 million followers on its main social media page. Millonarios Fútbol Club have been tenants of the Estadio Nemesio Camacho since 1938 and Independiente Santa Fe have been tenants of the venue since 1952. Both clubs won the Colombian top-flight football league various times. In 1948, Independiente Santa Fe were crowned Colombian football champions for the first time in their history. Millonarios Fútbol Club won their first top-flight league title in 1949. In 1972, they became the first Colombian football club with 10 domestic top-flight league titles.

The Copa Libertadores

Millonarios Fútbol Club reached the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores, the South American championship for football clubs, in 1960 for the first time in their history. Club Olimpia from Paraguay defeated the Millonarios in the semi-finals. One year later, Independiente Santa Fe reached the semi-finals of the tournament for the first time in their history. They were defeated by the Brazilian side Palmeiras.
