The construction of the stadium, which is nicknamed Estádio do Pacaembu, started in 1938. It hosted six matches for the 1950 FIFA World Cup. The first FIFA World Cup match at the stadium was won 3-2 by the national football team of Sweden after defeating the Italian Republic, also known as Italy.
