The construction of the Arena das Dunas started in 2011. The national football teams of Cameroon, Ghana, the Hellenic Republic, the Italian Republic, Japan, the United Mexican States, the United States and Uruguay played at the venue during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The Mexicans won the first-ever FIFA World Cup match at the stadium 1-0. They defeated Cameroon in front of 39,000 spectators. América Futebol Clube are the tenants of the venue. The club was founded in 1915 and they played their first-ever Brazilian top-flight football league match in 1973. América Futebol Clube and their rivals ABC became the first sports clubs from Rio Grande do Norte with 100,000 followers on their main social media page.
