The stadium, one of the largest sports venues by capacity in South America, was one of the venues for the Copa América in 2011. In September 2012, the venue hosted its first-ever match of The Rugby Championship, when the national rugby union team of the Argentine Republic lost against New Zealand. 53,000 people showed up for the match. Football clubs Estudiantes de La Plata and GELP played numerous matches at the Estadio Ciudad de La Plata. They became the first sports clubs from La Plata with 100,000 followers on their main social media page. The Estudiantes de La Plata won the South American championship for football clubs several times. In 1968, they won their first world championship title.
