The construction of the venue started in 2006 and its construction costs were $110 million. The Rio Tinto Stadium opened with a Major League Soccer match between Real Salt Lake and Red Bull New York in front of a sell-out crowd of 20,000 people. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. Real Salt Lake became the first football club from Utah with 100,000 followers on its main social media page. In 2009, they won the MLS Cup for the first time in their history after beating the LA Galaxy from California. The championship match took place in Seattle in front of 49,000 spectators. Real Salt Lake drew an average home league attendance of 17,000 in 2009.
