The construction of the stadium started in 2011. It is known as a venue for several events, like American football, concerts, football, Gaelic football, rugby sevens and rugby union. The BBVA Stadium is the result of combined commitments of $35 million from the city of Houston and $60 million from the Houston Dynamo. The Houston Dynamo became the second football club from Texas with 100,000 followers on its main social media page, after rivals FC Dallas. On 2 April 2006, the Houston Dynamo played their first-ever Major League Soccer match, which they won 5-2. They played against the Colorado Rapids in Houston with 25,000 people in attendance.

The Houston Dynamo won the MLS Cup in their debut season. They defeated the New England Revolution after penalties. Brian Ching, the first football player from Hawaii who played for the national football team of the United States, was crowned the man of the match. In 2014, the Houston Dynamo signed DaMarcus Beasley. He became the first football player from the United States who played in four FIFA World Cups. Beasley also became the first football player from the United States who played in a semi-final of the world famous UEFA Champions League, the European championship for football clubs. He lost the match with the Dutch side PSV from Eindhoven against the Italian side AC Milan.
