The venue opened as the Memphis Memorial Stadium with a capacity of 50,000. It hosted the home games of several former American football clubs. The Tennessee Oilers, currently known as the Tennessee Titans, played one NFL season at the venue. The former Canadian football club Memphis Mad Dogs and the former football club Memphis Rogues also used the stadium for home games.
