The construction of the Michigan Stadium, which opened with an American football match, started in 1926. The venue was renovated several times and it is nicknamed The Big House. The American football team of the Michigan Wolverines played numerous matches at the Michigan Stadium with attendances above 100,000. In 2014, the venue broke the record attendance for an ice hockey game. The world record match was between the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs, which attracted a crowd of 105,000.

Manchester United versus Real Madrid

In 2014, the world famous clubs Manchester United from the United Kingdom and Real Madrid from Spain broke the record attendance for a football game in the United States, with a crowd of 109,000. Manchester United won the FIFA Club World Cup in 2008 for the first time in their history and Real Madrid won the FIFA Club World Cup in 2014 for the first time in their history. In 2017, Real Madrid became the first sports team in the world with 100 million followers on its main social media page.
