The construction costs of the venue, which is owned by the University of Kentucky, were $12 million. It was renovated several times. The stadium, which was known as the Commonwealth Stadium, opened in 1973 with a capacity of 58,000. It opened with an American football match between the Kentucky Wildcats and the Virginia Tech Hokies. The home side won the game 31-26.
