In 1968, the stadium was used for the Games of the Olympiad. It hosted its first FIFA World Cup match in June 1970, when the national football team of Uruguay defeated Israel 2-0. The same month, the venue hosted two more FIFA World Cup games. It also hosted matches for the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Tenants Puebla Fútbol Club were founded in 1944. They won the North American football championship in 1991 for the first time in their history.
