The construction of the venue started in 1952. It hosted eight football matches for the 1970 FIFA World Cup and six football matches for the 1986 FIFA World Cup. The stadium’s first-ever FIFA World Cup match was won by the national football team of England after beating Peru 1-0. 50,000 people showed up for the game. Atlas Fútbol Club and Club Leones Negros de la Universidad de Guadalajara use the venue for home games. Atlas were founded in 1916 and the Leones Negros were founded in 1970. The Leones Negros won the North American football championship in 1978 for the first time in their history. Rafael Márquez, the first football player from Mexico in a FIFA Club World Cup final, started and ended his professional football career with Atlas. He played numerous matches for FC Barcelona, one of the major sports clubs in the world.
