The venue hosted its first Rugby World Cup match in 1991. The national rugby union team of New Zealand won the game against Italy in front of 15,000 spectators. The 1991 Rugby World Cup was won by Australia after beating England. It was the second edition of the tournament. The first edition of the tournament was won by New Zealand after defeating France in Auckland. The Welford Road Stadium hosted its second Rugby World Cup match in 1999. The 1999 Rugby World Cup was won by Australia after defeating France.

Leicester FC, also known as the Leicester Tigers, were founded in 1880. They have been tenants of the Welford Road Stadium since 1892. The venue opened with a rugby union match of Leicester FC. They are among the first European rugby union clubs with 100,000 followers on their main social media page. In 2013, Leicester FC became the first English rugby union club with 10 top-division titles. They drew an average home attendance of 21,000 in that domestic top-flight rugby union season. Leicester FC won their 10th title after beating the Northampton Saints 37-17. 81,000 people attended the final, which was played in London.
