During World War II, the stadium suffered bomb damage. Trevor Francis, the first English football player with an annual salary of £1 million, started his professional career with tenants Birmingham City Football Club in 1971. Birmingham City loaned him out to the Detroit Express, a former football club from Michigan who drew an average home attendance of 12,000 in their inaugural season with Trevor Francis.
