During World War II, the St. Andrew’s Stadium suffered bomb damage. Trevor Francis, the first English football player with an annual salary of £1 million, started his professional career with Birmingham City Football Club in 1971. Birmingham City FC loaned him out to the Detroit Express, a former football club from the United States. The Detroit Express from Michigan drew an average home attendance of 12,000 in their inaugural league season with Trevor Francis.
