The stadium’s record attendance was set in 1936, when 43,000 spectators watched a match between Plymouth Argyle Football Club and Aston Villa Football Club. Plymouth Argyle, nicknamed The Pilgrims, was founded in 1886. The club crest features the Mayflower, the ship that carried pilgrims from Plymouth to North America in 1620.
