The stadium became one of the largest sports venues by capacity in Spain. Club Atlético de Madrid have been tenants of the stadium since 2017. They were founded in 1903 and they are nicknamed Los Colchoneros, Los Indios and Los Rojiblancos. Atlético de Madrid reached the final of the European championship for football clubs several times. In 2014, they lost the UEFA Champions League final against their rivals Real Madrid. It was the first-ever UEFA Champions League final between two clubs from Madrid. Atlético de Madrid won the top-flight football league of Spain in 2014 for the 10th time in their history. They became one of the most valuable sports clubs in the world and they are among the first sports teams with 10 million followers on their main social media page.
