The stadium became one of the largest sports venues by capacity in Spain. Club Atlético de Madrid have been tenants of the stadium since 2017. They were founded in 1903 and they are nicknamed Los Colchoneros, Los Indios and Los Rojiblancos. Atlético de Madrid were crowned Spanish football champions in 1940 for the first time in their history. They won the tournament which ended as the Toyota Cup, the former world championship for football clubs, in 1974 after beating Club Atlético Independiente from the Argentine Republic.

They drew an average attendance of 46,000 in 19 home games in that domestic league season.
