The construction of the stadium started in 2015. On 16 June 2018, the venue hosted its first-ever FIFA World Cup match. The national football team of Croatia won the match against Nigeria 2-0. 31,000 people attended the game. The Croatians took the lead when Mario Mandžukić’s header from a corner was deflected into his own goal by Oghenekaro Etebo. Luka Modrić secured the win from the penalty spot after William Troost-Ekong fouled Mandžukić at a corner.
Baltika
Football club Baltika use the Kaliningrad Stadium for home matches. The club was founded in 1954 under a different name. In 1995, they were promoted to the Russian top-flight football league for the first time in their history. Baltika finished seventh place in the Russian top division in 1996. They drew an average home attendance of 17,000 during that league season.
