The venue opened as the Euroborg. Besides the nickname De Groene Hel (The Green Hell), the stadium is also called De Groene Kathedraal (The Green Cathedral). It opened with a football match between tenants FC Groningen and their rivals sc Heerenveen. The home side won the match 2-0, with Erik Nevland scoring the stadium’s first-ever goal. Luis Suárez, one of the first football players with 10 million followers on his main social media page, is one of the former players of FC Groningen. The Uruguayan football player became famous for his football skills and infamous for his biting incidents. He bit PSV’s Otman Bakkal on the shoulder during a match. The KNVB, the governing body of football in the Netherlands, suspended Suárez for seven matches after the biting incident.
