The venue, which opened as the Stadio Mario Brumana, was renovated several times. Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio, the first sports club from Bergamo with 100,000 followers on its main social media page, use the Gewiss Stadium for home matches. The football club was founded in 1907. Atalanta won the Italian cup tournament in 1963 for the first time in their history.

The first UEFA Champions League participation of Atalanta

Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio played their first-ever UEFA Champions League matches in 2019. They lost their first-ever UEFA Champions League game against Dinamo Zagreb. The match took place in the city of Zagreb in front of 28,000 spectators. Atalanta also lost their second and third UEFA Champions League matches. The club from Bergamo finished below the English side Manchester City in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. They finished above Shakhtar Donetsk from Ukraine and Dinamo Zagreb from Croatia. Atalanta defeated Valencia CF from Spain in the knockout stage of the tournament. The French side Paris Saint-Germain defeated Atalanta in the quarter-finals of the European championship for football clubs.

The second UEFA Champions League participation of Atalanta

In 2020, Atalanta played in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League for the second time in their history. They finished below the English side Liverpool FC in the group stage of the tournament. Atalanta finished above the Dutch side Ajax and the Danish side FC Midtjylland. In the round of 16, they faced Real Madrid. Atalanta lost twice against the Spanish football giants in the knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League. Real Madrid, the first sports club with 100 million followers on its main social media page, won the world championship for football clubs various times.
