The stadium is known as a venue for several events, like athletics, concerts, football and religious gatherings. In 1984, it was one of the venues for the Olympic Winter Games. The national football team of Bosnia and Herzegovina played numerous matches at the stadium. In 2014, they played their first-ever FIFA World Cup games. Bosnia and Herzegovina finished below the Argentine Republic and Nigeria in the group stage of the tournament. They finished above Iran. The stadium is named after a former player of FK Sarajevo. The club was founded in 1946 under a different name. FK Sarajevo won the top-flight football league of Bosnia and Herzegovina various times. They also won the cup tournament of Bosnia and Herzegovina various times.
