The construction of the stadium, which is among the main sports venues in Malaysia, started in 1990. It opened with a football match between Selangor and the Scottish side Dundee United Football Club. Dundee United won the Scottish top-flight football league in 1983 for the first time in their history. Selangor was founded in 1936. They won the top-flight football league of Malaysia various times. In 1967, Selangor lost their first-ever final of the Asian championship for football clubs. Hapoel Tel-Aviv won the game, which was played in Thailand in front of 12,000 spectators, 2-1. Hapoel Tel-Aviv became the first football club from Israel with a continental championship title, followed by rivals Maccabi Tel-Aviv in 1969.
