The Hitomebore Stadium Miyagi is also used for athletics and concerts. In 2002, it hosted football matches for the prestigious FIFA World Cup. The stadium’s first-ever FIFA World Cup match was won by the national football team of the United Mexican States, also known as Mexico, after defeating Ecuador 2-1. In 2002, the stadium hosted the first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout phase match of Japan. The national football teams of Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, England, Germany, Ireland, the Italian Republic, Korea, the United Mexican States, Paraguay, Senegal, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and the United States also reached the knockout stage of the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
