The construction of the football stadium, which has a retractable roof, started in 2019. It opened as the largest sports venue by capacity in Indonesia. The Jakarta International Stadium opened with a football match between Persija and the Thai side Chonburi Football Club. The game, which attracted a crowd of 60,000, ended in a 3-3 draw. Persija and Chonburi FC are among the first south-eastern Asian sports clubs with 1 million followers on their main social media page.
Persija
Persija use the stadium for home matches. In 2001, they were crowned Indonesian football champions for the 10th time in their history. Persija won their 10th title after winning a game in front of tens of thousands of spectators in Jakarta. Persija have an intense rivalry with Persib, which has led to violence among fans on several occasions. Both clubs are located on the island of Java.
