The Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium opened as one of the largest sports venues by capacity in India. The stadium became one of the venues used by the national cricket team of India. In 1983, they were crowned world cricket champions for the first time in their history. They won the third edition of the world cricket championship in front of 24,000 spectators in the United Kingdom. It was the third consecutive world cricket championship final in London. The following edition of the tournament, which was won by Australia after beating England, took place in India.
