The Brazilian football player Givanildo Vieira de Sousa, nicknamed Hulk, left the Russian side Zenit for SIPG in 2016. It became the most expensive transfer ever for an Asian football club. Later that year, the Argentine football star Carlos Tévez became the highest paid athlete living in China. He left the Boca Juniors for Shanghai Greenland Shenhua, the arch-rivals of SIPG.
