The stadium is also used for athletics and concerts. Tenants Shanghai International Port Group Football Club were founded in 2005 under a different name. They qualified for the AFC Champions League, the championship for Asian football clubs, in 2015 for the first time in their history. SIPG FC drew an average home attendance of 26,000 in that domestic top-flight football league season. Sun Xiang ended his professional football career with SIPG. He became the first Chinese football player in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League when he faced Arsenal Football Club, one of the first sports clubs with 10 million followers on their main social media page, with the Dutch side PSV from Eindhoven.
The Brazilian football player Givanildo Vieira de Sousa, nicknamed Hulk, left the Russian side Zenit for SIPG in 2016. It became the most expensive transfer ever for an Asian football club. Later that year, the record was broken by the Argentine football star Carlos Tévez. He left the Boca Juniors for Shanghai Greenland Shenhua, the rivals of SIPG. Tévez played in the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup final with Manchester United. Carlos Tévez and Manchester United defeated Liga Deportiva Universitaria from Ecuador in that game.
