The stadium is also used for athletics. In 1991, it hosted the inaugural final of the world championship for women’s national football teams. The United States won the match 2-1 against Norway. Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao, the first Chinese sports club with a value of $100 million, use the Tianhe Sports Centre Stadium for home games. They were founded under a different name and they won their first domestic top-flight football league title in 2011. Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao drew an average attendance of 45,000 in 15 home games during that domestic football season. Later, they won several top division titles in a row.
Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao were crowned Asian football champions in 2013 for the first time in their history in front of 55,000 fans in Guangzhou. The Brazilian Elkeson de Oliveira Cardoso and Gao Lin, who played his first match for the national football team of China in 2005, both scored in the matches against the Korean side FC Seoul. Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao finished fourth place in their first-ever FIFA Club World Cup appearance in 2013.
