The venue is the home of football club Beijing Guoan Football Club, one of the first Chinese sports clubs with a value of $100 million. In 2009, Beijing Guoan were crowned Chinese football champions for the first time in their history. They drew an average home attendance of 35,000 in that domestic league season. In 2007, the Beijing Fengtai Stadium hosted a friendly match of the Spanish side FC Barcelona, the first-ever club to win two FIFA Club World Cup titles. FC Barcelona became one of the major sports clubs in the world. The former football club Beijing Renhe played numerous matches at the Beijing Fengtai Stadium. Sun Jihai ended his professional career with Beijing Renhe. In 2002, Sun Jihai became the first Chinese football player who scored in the world famous Premier League when he defeated Birmingham City FC with Manchester City FC.
