The MA Aziz Stadium opened with a cricket match. Sporting Club East Bengal, the first football club from the Indian subcontinent with 1 million followers on its main social media page, played at the venue. The football club from Kolkata was founded in 1920. They were crowned Indian football champions several times. In 2020, East Bengal joined the Indian Super League. The MA Aziz Stadium hosted matches of the national football team of Bangladesh.

Mohamed Zahid Hasan Ameli, who was born in Pirojpur in 1987, became the most-capped player for the national football team of Bangladesh. He played various matches at the MA Aziz Stadium. Some matches of the second edition of the Bangladesh Premier League were played at the venue. The second edition of the Bangladesh Premier League was won by the cricket club which is now known as the Dhaka Platoon. They also won the first edition of the tournament. The Dhaka Platoon cricket club is among the first cricket clubs from Bangladesh with 100,000 followers on its main social media page.
