The stadium, which is also sometimes used for athletics, opened as one of the largest sports venues by capacity in Egypt. It was one of the FIFA U-20 World Cup venues in 2009. The football tournament was won by Ghana after defeating Brazil in front of tens of thousands of fans in Cairo. The first FIFA U-20 World Cup match at the venue took place on 25 September 2009. Venezuela won the game against Nigeria and Yonathan Alexander Del Valle Rodríguez scored the only goal of the match.
The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations
The venue named Al-Ahly WE al-Salam Stadium hosted various matches for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. The national football teams of Algeria, Benin, Burundi, the Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Madagascar, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Tunisia played at the venue during the tournament. The African championship for national football teams was won by Algeria after beating Senegal.
Al-Ahly and Zamalek
The stadium hosted numerous home games of Al-Ahly. The football club became the first African sports club with 10 million followers on its main social media page. The rivalry of Al-Ahly Sporting Club with Zamalek Sporting Club is famous. The rivalry between both clubs is considered one of the fiercest in African football. Several matches between Al-Ahly and Zamalek attracted attendances above 100,000. Al-Ahly won the African championship for football clubs various times.
The world championship for football clubs
In 2005, Al-Ahly became the first club from Egypt in the world championship for football clubs. Al-Ahly lost their first match at the tournament in Tokyo in front of 28,000 people. One year later, the club played in the world championship again. This time, they finished third place after defeating Club América from the United Mexican States 2-1.
