The stadium opened in 1937 with a capacity of 64,000. It has several nicknames, like De Kuip (The Tub) and De Voetbaltempel (The Football Temple). It hosted 2000 UEFA European Football Championship matches of Denmark, the French Republic, Germany, the Italian Republic, the Netherlands, Norway, the Portuguese Republic, Spain and Yugoslavia. The stadium hosted the final of the tournament, which was won by the French Republic after defeating the Italian Republic 2-1. Feyenoord have been tenants of the venue since it opened in 1937. The club was founded in 1908 under a different name. Feyenoord were crowned Dutch football champions in 1924 for the first time in their history. In 1971, they became the second club with 10 Dutch top-flight football league titles.

Feyenoord became the third Dutch sports club with a value of $100 million, after Ajax and PSV. They won the European championship for football clubs in 1970 for the first time in their history after beating the Scottish side Celtic Football Club in Milan. One year later, Ajax from Amsterdam became the second football club from the Netherlands with a European championship title. In 1988, PSV from Eindhoven became the third European football champions from the Netherlands. In 2002, Stadion Feijenoord hosted the UEFA Cup final. The tournament was won by Feyenoord after defeating the German side Borussia Dortmund 3-2. 48,000 people attended the game. Feyenoord drew an average home attendance of 39,000 during that domestic football league season.

The Johan Cruijff ArenA, which is named after the Dutch football legend Johan Cruijff, has a retractable roof. It opened as the Amsterdam ArenA. The first match at the stadium was won by AC Milan after beating Ajax. AFC Ajax won the European championship for football clubs several times. They are named after a mythological Greek hero. The former American football club Amsterdam Admirals had been tenants of the stadium between 1997 and 2007. They drew an average home attendance of 11,000 in their final league season. The stadium, also known as a venue for concerts, hosted its first UEFA Champions League final in 1998. The prestigious football game was won by the Spanish club Real Madrid after defeating the Italian club Juventus 1-0.

The stadium hosted three matches for the 2000 UEFA European Football Championship. The first match of the tournament was won by the Portuguese Republic after defeating England 3-2. In the second game, Sweden faced Turkey. The third game was won by the Italian Republic after defeating Sweden. The Philips Stadion was expanded several times. The expansion of the four corners of the venue in 2002 led to its current capacity. PSV (Philips Sport Vereniging) are the tenants of the Philips Stadion. The club was founded in 1913 as a team for Philips employees. World class players like Arjen Robben, Romário, Ronaldo, Rutgerus van Nistelrooij and Ruud Gullit played for PSV. In 1978, PSV won their first major European trophy when they won the UEFA Cup. PSV were crowned European football champions in 1988 for the first time in their history. The final of the tournament was played in Stuttgart in front of 64,000 fans. PSV won 6-5 on penalties after a goalless draw against SL Benfica from the Portuguese Republic after extra time. PSV played their first-ever world championship final in 1988.

The clubs which are currently known as FC Den Bosch, FC Eindhoven, NAC Breda, PSV and Willem II are the only football clubs from North Brabant with at least one top-division title. PSV won their first-ever domestic top-division title in 1929. In 2007, they became the second Dutch football club with 20 top-flight league titles. PSV drew an average home attendance of 33,000 in 17 home games in that domestic football league season. The Philips Sports Vereniging also won the Dutch cup tournament various times. In 2010, they made international headlines when they humiliated the former European champions Feyenoord 10-0 at the Philips Stadion. PSV also defeated some of the most famous and successful football clubs in the world at the Philips Stadion, like AC Milan, Bayern München, FC Barcelona, Manchester United and Real Madrid. They also won numerous matches in Eindhoven against their arch-rivals AFC Ajax from Amsterdam.
